Reasons to go to Italy? History, beauty, etc., etc., but one common factor is FOOD. Some may say that Italian food is overrated, I think those people are short of crazy, but whether you like it in your country, nothing compares to the authentic Italian food in Italy. Here are some recommendation for restaurants around the spectacular Amalfi Coast.

Positano

What is Positano?

  • A small town on the Amalfi Coast.

  • Originally a fishing village, some of the best food in the world, not only great for seafood (although you can't go wrong with fish and crustaceans here)

  • Lots of beautiful small boutiques along the tiny streets

Fun Facts:

  • It's called the Vertical City

  • Human remains found from 6000 BC

  • Myth that Poseidon founded the town, it was a gift to a nymph he liked

  • The Romans took over the town, possibly trying to take refuge from pirates

  • Many buildings and villas got destroyed when Vesuvius exploded in 79 AD

Price:

  • Free, it's a town so you can visit and walk around as you please

Hours:

  • All day, you can come in and out to explore the enchanting town at all hours of the day, all times of the year.

La Cambusa
Positano

It's a little bit of a walk down to the port, but very worth it. Upon arrival you will have a breathtaking view of the buildings crawling up the mountain, the perfect chaos of an Italian port, and lots of restaurants with delicious food. I loved the Cambusa, it was in a perfect location and the food was absolutely delicious.

La Pirata
Praiano

Sitting a couple of meters above the beautiful blue sea in a gorgeous inlet, this little restaurant has a sweet charm, mix the great food and you are guaranteed have a wonderful meal. All the waiters are super sweet and fun. I would recommend going at night, and sitting under the fairy lights. There is also an amazing bar that has been made inside the cave.

It does get windy and a little bit chilly at night, definitely bring a sweater or light jacket. Ladies be careful with your Marilyn Monroe dresses and skirts.

La Pirata
Praiano
Alfonso a Mare
Praiano

An obvious choice when you get to the beach in Praiano, it is the first restaurant you see on the beach. We went as an obvious choice. The atmosphere is very lively and the food is good! The best thing about this restaurant is looking up and seeing the two cliffs on either side of you.

Kasai
Praiano

This was a local recommendation from our Airbnb host. He said it was one of the best, if not the best restaurant in town. The food here is amazing. There was more of a local feel to this restaurant, it was delicious and welcoming. The waiters have a lot of personality and are eager to share their personal favorites with you.

There is barely any parking, walking is the way to go. Also, this restaurant is a local favorite and is always busy. Be sure to call in and reserve, or arrive around opening hour. The chef's menu came recommended too, you get a lot for your money. It was the favorite meal at the table that night.

Il San Pietro di Positano
Positano

Like most restaurants and hotels along the Amalfi Coast, a stunning view and happy taste buds are included as part of the deal. This restaurant is no different, well only that it is a beautiful five star hotel and restaurant with an even more captivating view; perfect for a romantic date. There is a gorgeous courtyard terrace that sits directly on top of a high cliff. The restaurant is gorgeous and very elegant.

*Note: Since this is on the fancier side of things, dress code is important. Men, long pants and appropriate shoes and shirts are required in order to be seated

Price:

  • 11 euros

  • You can pay more and have access to 5 digging sites (including Pompeii)

Hours:

  • 8:30 am - 7:30 pm (April 1- October 31)

  • 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (November 1 - March 31)

*Note: there are hardly any tourists at this site. Many people have recommended it more than Pompeii, I haven't personally been to Pompeii so I can't say. This place was absolutely spectacular. You get to walk inside of the structures, something you aren't allowed to do in Pompeii.

**Note: it's notthe safest neighborhood so make sure you follow the signs for Scavi di Ercolano

Ercolano

What is Ercolano?

  • Known as Herculaneum in english

  • Active archeological site of the town that got buried after Vesuvius exploded

Fun Facts:

  • Part of the town of modern Ercolano is now built over the original ruins

  • Was destroyed/preserved after the eruption of the Volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD

  • The city is of Greek origin (named after Hercules)

  • The people died because due to suffocation from the pyroclastic flow, not lava

  • Was buried 15-18 m (50-60 feet) deep, made excavation harder but protected it from looters and other threats - so much so that food in ovens was carbonized and protected

  • Had an underground sewage system

  • Was found by accident

  • Julius Caesar had a villa with a garden here

  • It was residential (likely more expensive) - unlike Pompeii

Ravello

What is Ravello?

  • Town located in the mountains on the Amalfi Coast

Fun Facts:

  • Was a shelter from the Barbarians

  • Popular spot for different types of artists, writers, and musicians.

Price:

  • The town is free to visit
