Location
You don't need to stay in the tourist center a.k.a. facing the Duomo, although that would be amazing.
I recommend staying close to the river Arno and Ponte Vecchio, again not on the river necessarily but no more that 3-4 blocks away in any direction. That way you can walk anywhere you need to go. You'll be around the best restaurants, museums, historical sites, night life, etc.

These hotels are very close to each other. One is very luxury and gorgeous. The other is a more affordable option, comfortable, and in a perfect location.

Currency
In Italy they use the Euro. I recommend exchanging your currency in your local bank for euros before you arrive. I would avoid exchange offices, they normally give you the worst rates. Depending on what your transaction fees are (varies on card and bank) I think atm withdrawals are the best. Since you normally get charged per withdrawal it's always better to take out more at once.
Outlet
This is the outlet you will need to bring adapters for. It's important to remember this in order to charge any of your electronics. You will be able to buy them there but it may not be as easy to find right away, and you don't want to be stuck without a charged phone unable to pull up reservations or reservations.
