Ever wonder what's going on in different parts of the world? You always know what's happening in your own town, but what if you could join another celebration you never even knew was happening. Instead of having terrible FOMO watching social media posts, cross some things off of your bucket list by making it to these legendary events.


January

Carnevale di Venezia

Where: Venice, Italy


Everyone has attended or wanted to attend a masquerade party, right? What if you could attend the masquerade ball of masquarade balls? This Carnevale, or carnival, has been around since the 1100s. It became an official tradition during the Renaissance. So get your mask and costume ready and head to the breathtaking city of Venice.

Carnaval

Where: Brazil - recommended Rio de Janeiro, Brazil


Join the famous Brazilian batucadas and feel the country's heartbeat during this exciting week of Carnaval. Enjoy floats, costumes, drums, and of course lots and lots of samba. This is one of my greatest memories from living in Rio, if you don't make it this year be sure it gets on your bucket list for the future.

Holi Festival 

Where: India


Get ready to get all the right types of messy in the most colorful festival in the world, also known as the festival of love. Welcome the new life-giving season of Spring by uniting with everyone in throwing vibrant color powders at each other while singing and dancing.

April

 Kings Day Celebration

Where: Amsterdam, Netherlands


Join hundreds of thousands of people on the streets all around the Netherlands to celebrate the dutch King Willem-Alexander. Though this celebration is a nation-wide event, the most popular place to celebrate is in Amsterdam. The streets will be filled with people, music, food, art, basically the best time ever, trust me Dutch people know how to have fun.

Cannes Film Festival 

Where: Cannes, France


Cannes already is a stunning little town on the Côte d'Azur in France on an average day. If you want to experience the definition of glamour be sure to go during the most famous film festival in the world. You will be surrounded by extraordinary talent and creativity, including your favorite celebrities.

Inti Raymi

Where: Cusco, Peru


Inti Raymi, also known as the Sun Festival in English is a religious ceremony to celebrate the Incan god of the sun or Inti. It is held on the winter solstice (Southern Hemisphere winter solstice), and the shortest day of the year. It is also the start of the Incan new year.

July

Palio di Siena

Where: Siena, Italy


Watch as the small vibrant city comes to life for the event they prepare for all year. Experience the oldest horse race in the world, dating back to the early 17th century. Watch as the 17 contrade, or districts, compete against each other. You will see the first 10 in the first Palio in July, and the victor and remaining contrade in the second and final Palio held in August. Gather in il Campo to watch the jockeys ride their horses bare back in the most adrenaline filled minutes of your life. And of course, you have to stay and celebrate before and after.

 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Military Tattoo

Where: Edinburgh, Scotland


Anything from comedy shows, theatre, dance, basically all forms of art are to be found here in the biggest arts festival in the world. There are thousands of performers and performances from all over the globe on hundreds of stages. You can also catch the military tattoo that is held in Edinburgh castle. Different military bands come from around the world, the countries vary from year to year. It's a beautiful and emotional experience you won't want to miss.

September

Oktoberfest

Where: Munich, Bavaria, Germany


Grab your lederhosen and a few beers and head to the biggest beer festival in the world. So many cities around the globe have adopted Oktoberfest, but the going back to the place of origin is a different experience. Millions of liters of beer will be served in the two week period.

October

Dia de los Muertos

Where: Mexico City, Mexico


Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead in English, is celebrated throughout the entire country of Mexico. People gather to pray for the loved ones who have died to help them on their spiritual journey. This is completely different to Halloween, and isn't meant to be a scary day, rather a celebration of those who have passed. November 1st is a day to remember the children that have died "Dia de los Inocentes" or "Dia de los Angelitos", and November 2nd it a day to remember the adults and is knowns as "Dia de los Muertos".

Loi Krathong 

Where: Chiang Mai, Thailand


You know that last scene in the movie Tangled that looks like a super dream and you secretly wish you could just jump into the movie? Well I have good news for you! At this festival you will place beautiful decorated baskets, usually made out of leaves, on the river. This festival is based on a lunar calendar and coincides with the full moon, in which the tradition will allow you to be one of thousands of people to release floating lanterns into the night sky. This festival is to pay respects to the water spirits.

December

Northern Lights

Where: Tromsø, Norway


"The sky's awake" came from somewhere. No matter what you celebrate in December, we all agree that it's a time to be cuddly and warm right? How about experiencing the most amazing light spectacle in the world in the North Pole? Grab some hot cocoa, and bundle up to get a front row seat to nature's most magnificent show.


Dates: All of December (best time to see the lights is from September - April)
